Predict it.

Hi Everyone, I hope you have had a good week. I can’t believe next week is Thanksgiving! Holidays often bring mixed emotions in most of us. Holidays are typically a time to gather with family and friends. Although intended to be a time for joy, the holidays can also bring a sense of anxiety, fear or sadness. There are many reasons for this. Loved ones who have passed away may create a sense of sorrow, loneliness and pain. Lack of close relationships with family or friends can also trigger similar emotions. In situations where you will be with family and…

What’s your goal?

Hi Everyone, Well last week we had Hurricane Sandy and this week we had snow flurries! I wonder if next week we might get… sunshine and 70’s!???? I know, wishful thinking. Unfortunately, as you know, the weather is not something we can control. Life tends to be easier if we focus our energy within those things we can control. Yep, you guessed it your thoughts and behaviors. More specifically, lets focus on what you want. Recently I was explaining how when we feel depressed or anxious, we want to “Not” feel that way. So we tend to do things in…

How am I helping?

Hi Everyone, I hope that you have not been too effected by Hurricane Sandy. If you have been, please trust that I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. In thinking about the events of this week and the aftermath of what Sandy left behind, it helped me to take some time and think about what’s important in life. I imagine that this is something many of us may do after such an experience or when we go through a loss of some kind. It is important every once an awhile to take the time to slow down, refocus…

Making therapy effective.

Hi Everyone, As always, I hope you have been doing well.  Things for me have been very busy and thus the reason I have not written for two weeks:/ Over these past two weeks, I have thought of several different topics to write about. These ranged from the importance of sleep to, how to communicate with supports to, do we enable ourselves. Although I may write about all of these topics in the future, this week I want to focus on the topic, making therapy effective. In particular I want to touch on the role of medication, a therapist and…

How do I want to be today?

Hi Everyone, Hope you have been focusing on the things within your control! My last blog might have been rather difficult to complete. Many of you might have picked one or two things from your list and tried it for the first day or so. As is so often the case, after a couple of days, life gets in the way and pretty soon three or four days go by and you forgot or didn’t get around to practicing the change in behavior or thought (e.g. focusing on the positives, engaging in self-care, etc…). It’s okay if you were struggling….

Making life easier.

Hi Everyone, Ever wish that life could be easier? Ever think, “Why does life have to be so hard?”. In order to make life easier, I have an assignment for you to try. You will need several pieces of paper and a pen or pencil. First, I’d like to think about the following question. “If you could change things, what would you change?”                                                    Take a moment to make your list of all the things you…

Response to recent questions 9/13/12

So here are a few questions recently asked. 1.) Does the cycle work for every emotion no matter the past or ongoing situations? If not, what makes it work? Yes the cycle can be applied to every emotion, regardless of past or ongoing situations. Try it out and see for yourself. If you are struggling with it or find that it doesn’t fit. Send me your cycle and I will help you through it. 2.) Is there anyone for whom it will not work? The only situations in which the cycle would not be effective is when a person is…

You’re in charge!

Hi Everyone, Hope you found the strategies I described over the last few weeks helpful. This week I wanted to take some time to talk about owning your treatment. Over the past twenty five plus years that I’ve been a therapist, I’ve learned that no matter how good a therapist is or how good his or her suggestions and strategies may be, the client needs to take ownership of his or her treatment. You are in charge. You decide what you are willing to work on or change about your thoughts, actions and reactions. Many have described that the strategies…

More strategies

Hi Everyone, Hope you were able to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend. As promised, this week’s blog is more strategies. The first strategy is journaling. Often people will say they have tried journaling and it hasn’t helped. When we talk further I usually learn that their journaling is keeping a diary of what went bad that day. This is not the journaling I am referring to. If you journal to get things out and just empty your mind of the negative then sometimes writing what you are worried about or what has been upsetting you can be helpful. Another way…
