Rosemary asks Dr. Lou

Hello Everyone, What makes you laugh?  Laughter can be great medicine.  I remember one of my clients said he would watch a half hour of comedy central every day as part of his treatment for overcoming depression.  Try it sometime!! Thanks for sending in your questions and topics of interest.  The response has been great. The first one comes from Rosemary.  She asks, “If most of my anxiety is fear-based, how do you make friends with the fear?” This is a great question because the answer lies within it.  If you are friends with something, it implies that you are…

What is depression or anxiety?

Hello everyone, What has made you smile recently?  Take a moment to think about it.  I hope it made you smile again.  Recently I read an article in the NY Times about how botox helped individuals reduce their depression scores.  Imagine that.  Just smiling helps. In the last couple weeks I have been thinking about this blog I’ve been writing for two years now. Wow how time flies! Well I was thinking that the majority of time I am writing about what to do if you have depression or anxiety.  I’ve been thinking that perhaps it is time again to…

What’s your decision?

Hello everyone, Did you find your African Violet? What’s been gong well. Often what keeps someone from moving forward is a decision to do so.  When we feel stuck, there is often indecision and uncertainty or fear of making the wrong choice that holds us back.  While it is typically better to think things through rather than be impulsive, continuously being indecisive may not be much better. So how can you make a decision? There are probably numerous ways to go about making a decision and I would like to offer my two cents. One of the first steps would…

What’s the African Violet part of your life?

Hello everyone, I hope you enjoyed the 4th of July holiday.  What did you do for you? Throughout most of my blogs you will probably notice various themes.  Themes of change, focusing on the positives, self-care, replacing and challenging the negative, etc… One of the reasons involves the influence of Bill O’Hanlon.  He is a therapist and one of the creators of a therapy called Solution Focused Therapy. I often use many of the strategies and ideas in my work with others as well as my personal life. This therapy approach focuses on the positives, strengths and looks for ways…

If I weren’t afraid I would…

Hello Everyone, What has been going well? This week I would like to talk about how fear keeps us stuck. Think about any activity or opportunity you have been tentative or chose not to engage in. Applying for a job or a promotion.  Reaching out to a friend you haven’t talk to in awhile. Asking for help.  If you have been wanting to do such things but haven’t, the primary reason is likely to involve a fear of something.  “I didn’t call or follow up with that company because I was afraid I wouldn’t be offered the job.”  “I didn’t ask…

FILL’ER UP

Hello Everyone, What are you enjoying? This week. That’s not just a way I want to start this blog.  It is what I would like you to focus on.  What are you doing that you find enjoyable? Notice I asked, “what are” you doing not what have you done.  If you have enjoyed tasks or activities in the past, that’s great.  If it has been awhile, you might be running on empty soon.  In my book, “When you can’t snap out of it”, you may recall the exercise, “FILL ‘ER UP”.  This exercise refers to how we need to keep…

When do you feel good?

Hello everyone, When do you feel good? This week, I would like to focus on the contributing factors to feeling good. This involves several aspects such as, physical, social, financial, and spiritual. If you struggle with ongoing pain (i.e. back pain, knee pain, headaches) or physical limitations (i.e. inability to run due to weight or breathing issue) can you feel good?  If you have a limited social network or have a limited income, can you feel good? Do you have to be spiritual to feel good? Often times we point to such factors as reasons we don’t feel good and…

I just want to feel more stable.

Hello everyone, What has been going well this past week? Lately, my blogs have been focusing on feeling stuck and how to change.  What if you are changing all the time? Sometimes we struggle with our moods fluctuating too much. Sometimes we may cater to others or our situation.  We might go along with whatever everyone else wants so as to not rock the boat. This can lead to regrets and lots of emotional ups and downs.  As a result, you may wish to be more emotionally stable. You may wish you could figure out what you really want instead…

Acceptance allows for change.

Hello everyone, What did you enjoy the most about this past week? It tends to be the case that whatever we focus on creates our mood.  If we focus on the negative we feel negative.  When we focus on the positive we tend to feel positive.  One of the challenges we often face is having enough belief in our ability to change.  Another struggle is accepting that we need to change.  So frequently we focus and hope that our situation or others around us change so that we can feel better.  That would be nice.  I don’t know about you,…

Am I ever going to be free?

Hello everyone, Well it has been a couple of weeks.  How have you been coping? Individuals will frequently ask me, “Will I have to work on beating my depression/anxiety forever?”.  My response is as any respectable psychologist would say, “it depends!”. Life can always present us with challenges and obstacles as well as windows of opportunity.  Since life often operates outside of our control, we are left with the option to cope with it well or not so well.  Some days and weeks, we do cope rather well and still other times we may not cope as well. Okay, enough…
